CRAIGSLIST MURDER ARRESTS: FINAL SUSPECT CAPTURED

Clabon Terrel Berniard WANTED
Clabon Terrel Berniard CAPTURED

Investigators say they’ve located all four suspects wanted in the April 28, 2010 Craigslist murder. The fourth suspect is identified as Clabon Terrel Berniard, 23, and he was on the run until this afternoon.  Investigators say he turned himself into authorities.

Over the weekend, Amanda Knight, 21, Joshua Nathan Resse, 20, and Kiyoshi Alan Higashi, 22, were arrested during a traffic stop in California. All three pled not guilty yesterday in court to charges of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and assault in connection with the April 28th incident.

Investigators say the victim, Jim Sanders, was shot three times as he tried to protect his son during the robbery.

Reports indicate Berniard is a hero.  In 2007 he helped to save two people from a house fire in Washington State. Investigators say his home was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, and he settled in Seattle after the disaster.

ARREST MADE IN D.C. PRINCIPAL MURDER

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010
Remembering Brian Betts

Remembering Brian Betts

Montgomery County Police announced a big break in the high school principal murder that rocked the D.C. – Maryland border.  Police Chief J. Thomas Manger says Alante Saunders and Sharif Tau Lancaster, both 18, met principal Brian Betts on a phone sex line and targeted him as a victim.  The teens are facing murder, robbery and a handgun violation charge. A third teen will most likely face the same charges as well.

Chief Manger says Saunders broke out of custody in D.C. at a youth rehabilitation services home, and the motive in this case appears to be robbery.  Physical evidence along with surveillance tape of the teens, and the mother of one of the teens using Brian’s credit cards, is what gave them enough probable cause to make an arrest and bring down charges. Artura Otey Williams, 42, was charged with credit card theft.

At this point, the weapon used to kill Brian Betts has not been located.

DAY #4 – MISSING MOM AND SON (update)

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010
Shantina Smiley MISSING
Shantina Smiley MISSING

Today marks the fourth day a mother and her 8-year-old son have been missing.  Shantina Smiley and her son Azriel vanished over the weekend in Olympia, Washington creating a mystery that is leaving investigators stumped.  Police say Shantina and Azriel left their home in Silverdale, Washington around 5 p.m. and were heading to her step-father’s home in Castle Rock.  Shantina’s van was found early the next morning, abandoned near the North Gull Harbor, nowhere near her destination.  Police say the doors were open, cash, license and a credit card were left inside, but Shantina’s purse was gone.  The search continues this week to find this family as investigators put divers in the water, helicopters in the air, and are sending police patrols door-to-door.  Robb Simmons, Shantina’s fiancé, has created a website with his timeline of events.  I spoke with Lt. Chris Mealey from the Thurston Sheriff’s office this morning, and he says the water and ground search has been called off, but the investigation continues.  Investigators will continue to go door-to-door and track down leads to find Shantina and her son.  He says a neighbor reported hearing noise outside their home around 1 a.m. Sunday morning, so investigators will be at that home today to see if there are traces of the missing mom and son.

SUSAN POWELL CASE: Family Mini-Van Seized Again

Monday, February 1st, 2010
Susan Powell MISSING
Susan Powell MISSING

UPDATE 12:02 p.m. - I just spoke to Kiirsi Hellwell, friend of Susan and Josh Powell, and one of the organizers helping to spread the word about Susan.  She says starting next week, February 8 – 15, 2010, they will be getting the public to focus on a week of service in honor of Susan.  Susan’s friends and family are asking everyone to lift a needle and donate handmade items to women’s and children’s charities in Susan’s name. This effort will launch across the country.  To learn more about this, and what you can do in your own communities, please check out HEARTSKNITFOR SUSAN

Family friend Kiirsi says that over the weekend, the popular Susan Powell friends and family Facebook page disappeared. But after repeatedly contacting Facebook, it finally reappeared Saturday night.  She says a sick troll pretending to be Susan was posting pornographic pictures and sending harassing messages on the group page.  Thankfully, the disturbing posts have died down over the last week or two, but it has been a rough month.  Kiirsi says her husband picked Josh Powell up at the airport on Thursday night. Josh then came to their home to print out leases in preparation of renting out his house. As far as Kiirsi knows, Josh is still in Utah working on his home to prepare it for rent.  When Josh arrived at his Utah home, he was greeted with purple ribbons all over his house in honor of his wife.

Lindsey Baum MISSING
Lindsey Baum MISSING

Investigators say last summer Lindsey Baum left her friend’s house to walk home, but she never made it there.  Lindsey was only four blocks away just after 9 p.m. when she vanished on June 26, 2009.  Authorities say they have received hundreds of leads, and have conducted searches, but sadly nothing has turned up.  Just this week, the FBI announced they are adding to the reward to help find Lindsey which.  That reward is now $20,000 and a new search effort is being planned.

Lindsey was 10-years-old at the time she went missing, since then she’s had a birthday, a new school year started, and the holidays have come and gone without her family having any answers.  This beautiful child was last seen wearing a gray or blue hooded pullover shirt and blue jeans.  Let’s try to bring Lindsey home.  If you have any information, please call the Grays Harbor County Information Hot line toll free:  (866) 533-8765 or e-mail soadmin@co.grays-harbor.wa.us – You can even mail information to:  McCleary Police Department P.O. FAMILY OF 5 MURDERED

Monday, January 18th, 2010
suspect_pic
Five people were found murdered in a small Buckhorn community just outside Bellville, Texas yesterday. Police told me earlier they have Maron Thomas, 20, in custody and at this point they believe he is the only one responsible for this horrendous crime. George Washington, 69, his wife, Debra Washington, 54, Kiana Shree Phearse, 25, and Khalilah Masse-Chamers, 3, were all found shot to death inside their home on a large estate property. Just behind the residence, investigators found a fifth victim who was identified today as Cedric Thomas, 19.

Maron Thomas was arrested before the bodies were found when he was allegedly naked breaking into a car, and attempting to break into a home at a nearby property. Capital murder charges may be brought down against Thomas after the District Attorney has a chance to review the preliminary report on this case.

I spoke with the homeowner of the home where the bodies were found. I was told the Washington’s have rented the home for about three years, they were a very kind family who always paid on time. Investigators believe all the victims are related, but are waiting on autopsy results to release the connection to one another.  At this time, Maron Thomas, pictured above, is the only person of interest.

Where did Josh Powell go?

Susan Powell missing

Susan Powell missing

I just got off the phone with Assistant Police Chief Black and he confirms to me Josh Powell rented a car in Salt Lake city two evenings after his wife went missing, and drove for hundreds of miles.  Police do confirm there is a period of time they cannot account for Josh, or his whereabouts.  So far, five search warrants have been executed on this case, three to make entry into the Powell family home, one for the family mini-van, and one for Josh Powell’s DNA. An anonymous donor just came forward and is offering a $10,000 reward for information to find Susan.

2 deputies shot, in same county where 4 officers were killed earlier this month

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009
Sgt. Nick Hausner

Sgt. Nick Hausner

Two Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies were shot last night during a domestic violence call.  Authorities say the two deputies responded to an unwanted guest call from a man who was fighting with his brother.  When the deputies entered the home, police say David E. Crable started shooting at the officers.  The deputies were able to return fire, killing the suspect inside the house.  Reports say people inside the home were helping to protect the officers until help could arrive to assist their injuries further.  Sgt. Nick Hausner, 43, a 20-year veteran, is listed in serious condition at this time.  Deputy Kent Mundell, 44, a 9 year veteran of the force is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.  Both men are husbands and fathers.  I wish them a speedy recovery, and many prayers with their friends, family and members of the department during one of the most difficult months they’ve ever had.

Earlier this month, on Sunday, November 28, 2009, investigators say Maurice Clemmons opened fire killing four Lakewood police officers. Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39; Ronald Owens, 37; Tina Griswold, 40; and Greg Richards 42.  All four were inside a coffee shop, getting ready to start their shift, when authorities believe Clemmons opened fire killing the officers.
