It’s been more than 48 hours since a 2-year-old went missing from his mother’s car.  The FBI is now assisting local authorities in Bellevue, Wash. to help find Sky Metalwala.  Julia Biryukova, Sky’s mom, told authorities she ran out of gas and left her child in his car seat.  Julia and her 4-year-old daughter walked to a nearby Chevron gas station.  When she returned, Sky was missing.

Investigators say the car was not locked.  Sky has brown eyes and dark hair and was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue and gray-striped pants.

If you have any information on this case, please contact the FBI.gov.

ONE YEAR LATER: Susan Powell Missing

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

One year has come and gone since Utah mom Susan Powell went missing.  It’s hard to think 12 months have passed and there has not yet been a break in the investigation.  Susan’s husband, Josh Powell, still remains a person of interest and he still resides in Washington State with his father, Steven Powell, in a community called Country Hallow.  Josh moved to Puyallup with their two sons not long after Susan vanished.

Assistant Chief Black with the West Valley Police in Utah said there’s enough circumstantial evidence to indicate that it is uncharacteristic of Susan to just disappear, and they are exploring the possibility that foul play could be involved. Investigators don’t want to treat this case early on as though Susan just up and walked away; they want to take all accounts into consideration in case this ends up turning into a criminal investigation.

Susan Powell’s 29th Birthday Today Marked With Massive Balloon Release

Today is Susan Powell’s 29th birthday. Her friends and family will honor the day with a massive two state balloon release, one in Utah and the other in Washington.  Everyone from the public is welcome to attend.

Winter is approaching quickly, summer has come and gone and Susan Powell has not been found. Over the last ten months since she went missing on December 7, 2009, many bodies have been found in the desert. When her family and close friends would get word, they simply held their breath and waited.

Over the summer a couple of searches took place in the area where Susan’s husband Josh Powell says he went camping the night she disappeared. Josh is still officially a “person of interest” in this case, but investigators have not moved forward with any official charges. When Susan went missing last December Josh told investigators he took his two small children out in the middle of the night in the West Desert. Since then many searches have been executed, but unfortunately nothing has been uncovered.

UPDATE:  Investigators say Bethany Storro admitted to authorities that the acid attack was a hoax.  She told authorities she threw the acid on herself.  Investigators have wasted hundreds of hours looking for a suspect who does not exist.  More to come on this story…

Bethany Storro was walking down the street in Vancouver, Washington, getting ready to head into a Starbucks. She was celebrating her new job and enjoying life when she was viciously attacked with acid. Police say an unknown African American woman walked up to Bethany and uttered the words: “Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?” The stranger then threw the contents inside the cup on Bethany’s face. Investigators believe the contents were some sort of acid.

The pain was agonizing as she fell to the ground screaming for dear life. The skin was burning off her face and parts of her clothes were disintegrating. Thursday, with her parents at her side, Bethany spoke out for the first time about the incident. She said she will work on forgiving her attacker.

Summer has come and gone and Susan Powell has not been found.  Over the last nine months since she went missing on December 7, 2009, many bodies have been found in the desert.  When her family and close friends get word, they simply hold their breath and wait.  That was the case earlier this week when a female body was found on a Wyoming ranch.  Investigators confirm that the body is not Susan, and that the search for her continues.

Over the summer a couple of searches took place in the area where Susan’s husband Josh Powell says he went camping the night she disappeared.  Josh is officially a “person of interest” in this case, but investigators have not moved forward with any official charges.  When Susan went missing last December Josh told investigators he took his two small children out in the middle of the night in the West Desert. Bethany was released from the hospital earlier this week and Vancouver’s Anytime Fitness announced a fundraiser to be held Friday to help ease some of the financial burden.  Bethany is a member at the facility that will host a self-defense class for women from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.  You can join the class for $20 and all of the proceeds will go to a fund.  Bethany’s co-workers at the Safeway where she is employed started an additional fund at Riverview Community Bank branches throughout Oregon and Washington.

COLD CASE: DEATH AT THE DOOR

Judy Forrest (left) Kanika Powell (right)

Kanika Powell’s case is a mystery to detectives in Prince George’s County, Maryland.  Sunday marked the two year anniversary since her murder. I met Kanika’s mother, Judy Forrest, last year at the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims in Washington, D.C. Judy continues to stand tall and is full of faith that the person who took her daughter’s life will be caught, and I share that faith with her.

Kanika graduated from Largo High School in 1998, and enlisted in the Army two years later. She served in Korea, and returned to her home in Prince George’s County after her tour. She then took on a job as a security contractor at Hopkins laboratory. Kanika was very private about the work she did for the laboratory, and would sometimes travel for days at a time to handle a work project before returning. Although Judy says she always knew where her daughter was going, Kanika’s family and friends were aware that she was not allowed to discuss what she did when she got there.

THE SEARCH CONTINUES FOR MISSING MOM SUSAN POWELL

Susan Powell - missing (Hardman photography)

Over the weekend, dozens of searchers descended on the area where missing mom Susan Powell’s husband says he went camping the night she disappeared.  Josh Powell is officially named a “person of interest” in this case, but investigators have not moved forward with any official charges.  When Susan went missing on December 7, 2009, Josh told investigators he took his two small children out in the middle of the night in the West Desert. Since then many searches have been executed, but unfortunately nothing has been uncovered.  Since the warm weather broke in the spring, many bodies have been discovered throughout the area where Susan went missing. None of the bodies have been Susan.

As for Susan’s family, they aren’t going to let the public forget their loved one. A billboard for the missing mom is now standing tall along route 161 in Washington State.  Susan’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, want to put their daughter back in the hearts of everyone with hopes of drumming up new leads.  This billboard is near the Cox’s home in Puyallup, Washington, the same place Josh Powell moved with their two small children not long after Susan went missing.  The Cox family has plans to put another billboard up in the Salt Lake City area this week.

HELPING THE MISSING – LAUNCH OF A NEW CENTER

Natalee Holloway Resource Center

Natalee Holloway Resource Center

The Natalee Holloway Resource Center is now open and ready to assist families who have missing loved ones.  The goal is to make the search easier within the first 48 hours, and to be a top notch center that offers information to educate the public on cases and what to do if someone they know goes missing. According to their official site, “The NHRC focuses educational programs, including a traveling safe program, crime prevention and encourages careers in the fields of forensic science and law enforcement.  The NHRC also provides families of missing persons with an action plan, missing poster templates, contacts, resources and handles press releases and media outreach.”

The center opened its doors in the heart of Washington, D.C. on the same day Joran Van Der Sloot, the man who may be responsible for Natalee’s disappearance in 2005, confessed to killing a 21-year-old woman in Peru.

Beth Holloway, Natalee’s mom, said, “The Natalee Holloway Resource Center, the main focus is education and crime prevention in the event a loved one goes missing. The resource center can be the family’s first stop for contact information, missing person poster development, and media engagement.”
