Shantina Smiley MISSING
Shantina Smiley MISSING

Today marks the fourth day a mother and her 8-year-old son have been missing.  Shantina Smiley and her son Azriel vanished over the weekend in Olympia, Washington creating a mystery that is leaving investigators stumped.  Police say Shantina and Azriel left their home in Silverdale, Washington around 5 p.m. and were heading to her step-father’s home in Castle Rock.  Shantina’s van was found early the next morning, abandoned near the North Gull Harbor, nowhere near her destination.  Police say the doors were open, cash, license and a credit card were left inside, but Shantina’s purse was gone.  The search continues this week to find this family as investigators put divers in the water, helicopters in the air, and are sending police patrols door-to-door.  Robb Simmons, Shantina’s fiancé, has created a website with his timeline of events.  I spoke with Lt. Chris Mealey from the Thurston Sheriff’s office this morning, and he says the water and ground search has been called off, but the investigation continues.  Investigators will continue to go door-to-door and track down leads to find Shantina and her son.  He says a neighbor reported hearing noise outside their home around 1 a.m. Sunday morning, so investigators will be at that home today to see if there are traces of the missing mom and son.

Jarred Harrell, a person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder, was extradited over night from Mississippi to Florida.  He is expected to make his first court appearance this morning to face charges of child pornography. Last Thursday, Florida Governor, Charlie Crist requested the extradition, and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour granted the request.  According to a press release from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, “Because the safety of all law enforcement officers involved and the successful extradition of this individual are of upmost importance, our agency will not reveal the exact date and time of the planned extradition.  In addition, if members of the media are able to obtain Harrell extradition timeline information from sources other than the CCSO, our agency will not respond to those related inquiries and will neither confirm nor deny the information.  Our agency will not divulge what law enforcement officers are part of the Harrell extradition process until after the process is complete. Once Jarred Harrell is safely transported to our jail facility here in Green Cove Springs, the media will be notified via an emailed release.  You will be provided ample notice post-arrival so that coverage arrangements can be made with the Clay County Clerk of Court for whatever court appearances may follow in the Clay County court system.  Our agency does not orchestrate “perp walks” of any kind and we have an enclosed sally port area through which defendants enter the jail.” Although we do not know the specific date Harrell will make an appearance in Florida, thankfully investigators are one step closer to possibly learning what happened to Somer.   Harrell has not yet been charged with Somer’s death.

TIMELINE OF ORLANDO SHOOTING
This information is from the Orlando Police official charging affidavit.

 NOVEMBER 6, 2009

 – 11:44 a.m. – Jason Rodriguez entered the main entrance to Reynolds, Smith and Hills in Orlando, FL.  Investigators say Rodriguez is a former employee of the business, and were instantly recognized by former co-workers.  One witness told police, they saw Rodriguez draw a handgun from a holster under his shirt, and fired two shots at a victim standing next to the reception desk.

– According to the affidavit, Rodriguez left the reception area, and went into a common work area.  That’s when investigators say he fired multiple shots, and causing injury to several other employees.  Thankfully, none of those injuries are considered life threatening.

– According to a witness, a person matching Rodriquez’s description was last seen leaving the scene in a silver compact car.  That witness copied down the tag number, and with that information, investigators tracked the vehicle to Rodriguez’s Orlando home.  Investigators say the car is registered to his parents.  The SWAT team arrived on the scene, and Rodriguez was standing in the front window with his hands in the air.  He was taken into custody without incident.

I will close in more of the timeline below in a few hours with a new updated post.

To learn more about Telacia’s life, please take a look at the Cleveland Fox segment.

On another note, my thoughts and prayers to all of the family and friends who lost so many at the Ft. Hood Army base today today… very tragic.
