Authorities say the first attacked occurred in February 1997 when a suspect approached a 25-year-old woman as she walked home. The man allegedly pulled out a gun and forced the victim into a nearby wooded area where he raped her. The FBI says since then, 17 other attacks total or attempted attacks have occurred.
The victims have been black, white and Hispanic and are usually approached outside as they walk. The suspect is described as black male who often wears a black mask or hooded sweatshirt. Gunman Hits Bellagio, Police Say Suspect Bolts with More Than $1.5 Million in Chips
Wednesday, December 15th, 2010
- Las Vegas Police released this surveillance grab from the Bellagio Hotel
It’s a roll of the dice, and a gutsy move to run into one of the most popular casinos in the world and run out with nearly $2 million in chips. It’s like something you would find in a movie. Instead, it happened in real life Tuesday morning.
Las Vegas Metro police say a man with a motorcycle helmet darted into the posh Bellagio casino, brandished a gun, went directly to a specific craps table and ran out with the chips. Eye witnesses say he jumped onto his motorcycle and sped off onto the Vegas strip, heading westbound. Authorities indicate it only took 2 – 3 minutes for the suspect to commit this crime and flee.
The chips the suspect stole are worth between $100 and $25,000. There’s a pretty good chance the high number chips have serial numbers or tracers on them, and it will be extremely difficult to trade them in or use in the future.
Husband and Wife Crime Fighting Team Bust Intruder with Tracking Device
Friday, October 29th, 2010
Great story out of the Washington Post yesterday on a husband/wife crimefighting team. It was the middle of the night on September 24 when Kari and Derek Fisher were sound asleep in their Adelphi, Maryland home. A slick thief ducked into their quiet home by slitting a hole in the screen and squeezing his way inside. The suspect crept around while the family, who never heard a peep, slept
When the Fisher’s awoke in the morning, the wife noticed that a video camera, radio, digital cameras and Derek’s wallet and cell phone were missing. Barely out the front door, and unbeknownst to the homeowners, the suspect started making phone calls through their Sprint carrier.
While scurrying to cut off credit cards and track missing electronics, the Fisher’s had a choice to cut off the cell phone. Instead of shutting it down, they decided to take action. The Sprint representative offered a free 15-day trial of Sprint Family Locator service. This is a service mainly targeted for parents to keep track of children, but many couples use it to track cheating spouses (awesome idea).
ARIZONA: COPYCAT ACID ATTACK?
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010
- Mesa Sketch
Investigators in Arizona are looking into a copycat acid attack on a woman in an apartment complex. Authorities say Derri Velarde, 41-year-old mother of five, was getting out of her car in her apartment complex on September 4 when she was attacked with acid. Investigators say the suspect did not say a word and tossed the contents of her cup on the victim, which immediately started to burn her face.
Although investigators in Washington believe Bethany Storro’s attack was random, investigators in Arizona believe this was deliberate. Mesa Police have released a sketch of a Hispanic woman, between 30 – 40 years old, around 5’6” and 140 pounds. She was described as having a ponytail and wide hips, and was wearing a black tank top and black sweat pants with a white stripe.
The victim immediately jumped in her shower and attempted to rinse off the acid, which may have helped her second degree burns. She is still recovering in the hospital.
ACID VICTIM RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL, FUNDRAISER PLANNED
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010
Bethany Storro (victim)
Bethany Storro was walking down the street in Vancouver, Washington, getting ready to head into a Starbucks. She was celebrating her new job and enjoying life when she was viciously attacked with acid. Police say an unknown African American woman walked up to Bethany and uttered the words: “Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?” The stranger then threw the contents inside the cup on Bethany’s face. Investigators believe the contents were some sort of acid.
The pain was agonizing as she fell to the ground screaming for dear life. The skin was burning off her face and parts of her clothes were disintegrating. Thursday, with her parents at her side, Bethany spoke out for the first time about the incident. She said she will work on forgiving her attacker.
Bethany was released from the hospital earlier this week and Vancouver’s Anytime Fitness announced a fundraiser to be held Friday to help ease some of the financial burden. Bethany is a member at the facility that will host a self-defense class for women from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. You can join the class for $20 and all of the proceeds will go to a fund. Bethany’s co-workers at the Safeway where she is employed started an additional fund at Riverview Community Bank branches throughout Oregon and Washington.
