WHERE IS BABY LAURYN DICKENS?

Lauryn Dickens MISSING
Lauryn Dickens MISSING

A baby in Memphis, Tennessee has been missing for two weeks and authorities fear the worst.  Investigators are trying to figure out where 9-month-old Lauryn Dickens could be with the limited information they have on the case.  Shakara Dickens reported her daughter missing one week after she claims that she gave the child to a stranger on Sept. 7.  Dickens, 19, was arrested this week and charged with aggravated child neglect and endangerment and filing a false police report.   Investigators have executed search warrants and have searched her apartment numerous times looking for clues that would hopefully lead to answers, but sadly the child has not yet been found.

This case is disturbing because it reminds me of a couple of other cases involving mothers who have reported their child missing, and either the child has not been found or horrific endings have taken place.  You may remember little Shaniya Davis, a beautiful girl who was reported missing by her mother Antoinette Davis in North Carolina.  A search went on for days before Shaniya’s body was found last November on the side of the road.  The investigation uncovered that Davis most likely sold her child as a prostitute to a man for money.  Shaniya was found raped and murdered.  Davis is charged with human trafficking, child abuse involving prostitution and filing a false police report.  Mario McNeill is charged with first degree rape and first degree murder.  The court cases are currently on-going.

ASK MICHELLE: Great question about the Shaniya Davis case

Friday, December 4th, 2009

I want to take a moment to thank each and every person who has taken time to write into the ASK Michelle Sigona section of the site.  I’ve enjoyed reading, and responding to each and every one of you.  Every so often, I thought I would post the question/comment and the response on this section.  Please keep your interesting thoughts, insight on cases, and ideas coming in.  We enjoy and appreciate each and every one of you.

To: Ask Michelle

From: Abbie

MESSAGE:
Have police said anything about investigating Antoinette’s sister in this case?
Mario was HER boyfriend. It was her house. Can’t believe she didn’t know what
was going down. Let’s get her charged with conspiracy and her kids put in a safe
place, too
.”

RESPONSE:

Hi Abbie - This is Michelle Sigona, thank you for taking the time to write in. I hope you and your family had a nice Thanksgiving.  You pose a very good question about Antoinette’s sister… and I can tell you based on my
conversations with investigators on this case, they say Brenda Davis (Antoinette’s sister) is in full corporation with the investigation.  At this point, they do not believe she is involved (of course, things are always subject to change), but as of now, she will not be charged and was not aware of what was allegedly taking place in the home that she held the lease on.

MARIO McNEILL CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE RAPE AND FIRST DEGREE MURDER

We learned more tonight about how little Shaniya Davis was murdered, and what happened to this child before her life was taken.  Fayetteville Police just held a press conference, and they say preliminary test results show Shaniya died from asphyxiation, and the testing is not complete.  Police also brought down charges against the man they’ve been holding for her kidnapping, and have officially charged Mario Andrette McNeill with First Degree Murder and First Degree Rape.  McNeill is being held without bond, and he will stay in the Cumberland County Detention Center.  The two lead detectives on the case are currently serving warrants on McNeill.

This story is heartbreaking.  It is hard to imagine the fear and trauma Shaniya Davis must have suffered before she was murdered.  That someone was able to wage these unspeakable acts against an innocent child and discard her so callously is beyond my comprehension.

Tragedy strikes Shaniya’s family twice in one lifetime

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009
The death of Shaniya Davis is not the first murder her father Bradley Lockhart has had to work through.  In March 1998, Bradley’s wife, Vicki Sue Lockhart was shot and killed, along with her 19-year-old sister Channel Coleman in Fayetteveille, N.C.  According to Vicki Sue’s family, the women fell victim to a robbery gone bad and were killed.  Five victims were shot during the robbery, three died, and two survived.  All of the victims were bound and gagged.  Vicki Sue left behind three beautiful children, Byron, 20, Cheyenne, 17, and Chavez, 13.  Vicki Sue’s parents, Byron and Phyllis Coleman took custody of the three kids after the murder because Bradley had to travel out of the state a lot for work as a contractor.  They wanted their grandchildren to grow up in a stable environment, Byron told me earlier today,  “We feel blessed that we have the kids, and they are able to get a good education, all of my family has been to college, and we are trying to carry on the family tradition, get through high school, and get to college.” Byron the oldest, is in college in Charlotte, and Cheyenne and Chavez are doing well in high school.

Over the years the custody battles have plagued the two families, but Shaniya’s death is mending the gap between them. “It’s like someone cutting your heart out, we lost a son in 1991, then losing Shaniya here is very hard on the family,” says Byron.  He and his wife Phyllis have lost three children total since 1991, so they understand the heartbreak Bradley is working through.  He says he even told Bradley Shaniya could live with them if she wanted to so she could be with her half-brothers and sisters.

Investigators in Fayetteville, North Carolina confirm the body found yesterday is in fact the body of little Shaniya Davis.  The official cause of death is still under investigation.  Police and volunteers were led to an area after they received information that Shaniya’s body was possibly dumped near a corridor off Highway 87 near the Lee/Harnett County Line.  The area where Shaniya was found is heavily wooded, and is about seven miles away from where she was last seen seven days ago at a hotel.  Pictures below allegedly show her in the arms of a man named Mario McNeill.
