UPDATE – 2 p.m.  Authorities closed in on Alward today in a cornfield in Colorado… Story developing…

This is the fourth time Douglas Alward, 48, has slid away from the hands of law enforcement.  A career criminal known for his jail breaks escaped from the Sterling Correctional State Facility in Colorado late Sunday night and hasn’t been seen since.  Late Tuesday, authorities announced a $15,000 reward.

Katherine Sanguinetti, Spokesperson for the Colorado State Prison, says authorities aren’t releasing the details of this escape because the investigation is ongoing, but she did say that he is a dangerous criminal who needs to be found.

Alward was serving time for first degree attempted murder, burglary and kidnapping.  Although he was eligible for parole in 2005, and a hearing was set for this October, he decided that breaking out from a secure perimeter would be better than waiting around.  He was housed in a facility with 2,500 other inmates and had been behind bars there since 2001.

U.S. Marshals are still on the hunt for a dangerous prison escapee and his fiancée, who is also his first cousin.  Investigators are aggressively tracking John McCluskey, 45, and Casslyn Welsh, 44 as tips pour in from across the country with sightings of the couple.  When I spoke to Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Rich Tracey this morning, he wanted the public to know that as the teams investigate leads, they do not leave one specific area for another. “We have not shifted, we’ve expanded, and we did not leave Montana and go to Arkansas.  We are simply expanding this investigation.  We are adding resources.”  The U.S. Marshals have the ability to follow up with leads anywhere in the country very quickly, and alerts have been sent out to the borders as well.  Tracey adds, “These folks are leaving devastation in their wake, it’s time for this to come to a close.”

CHILD RAPIST ESCAPEE NABBED

Arcade Joseph Comeaux, most recent addition to the United States Marshals TOP 15 Most Wanted, was caught earlier this morning in Houston, Texas.  Investigators say he was armed with two pistols at the time of his arrest.

BACKGROUND:

Arcade Joseph Comeaux was housed in the highest level of custody inside the Estelle Unit in Huntsville, Texas.  This means he did not have contact with other prisoners, and is secluded inside his cell 23 out of 24 hours a day, so the question is how did he get a gun?  That is exactly what investigators are trying to figure out as they piece together Comeaux’s daring escape and track down this dangerous criminal. Officials say Comeaux gained access to a pistol, held up two officers, and fled.On Monday, November 30, 2009, officials say Comeaux took two transport officers from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice hostage with a gun.  Officials say Comeaux was being transported from one facility to another at 4:45 a.m. when he brandished a pistol and ordered the officers to drive south to Baytown, Texas.  He was apparently shackled, sitting in his wheelchair at the time, and he even fired the weapon once in the van.  Officials say when they arrived in Baytown at the parking lot of an abandoned hospital, Comeaux handcuffed the officers together, stole one of their uniforms, and put men in the back of the van.  For some reason Comeaux left his pistol behind, but was able to snatch the other officers weapons (12-gague shotgun and two semiautomatic pistols). Thankfully the officers were found unharmed.  Officials say they will conduct a serious incident review to determine how Comeaux was able to obtain a firearm inside of their facility.
