Investigators confirm the search in the Gilgo and Oak Beach area will continue today with the help of multiple police agencies, the fire department and police recruits. Since December 2010, eight bodies have been found in the area. Authorities confirm the first four bodies discovered in the winter were prostitutes, they may have met the suspect on line and that victims may have died at the hands of a serial killer. One of the victims was reported missing about three and a half years ago and another was seen alive as early as last fall.
We do not know the identities of the most recent women found, but authorities say that none of the victims are missing woman Shannen Gilbert. Police say Shannan’s family initially reported her missing in May 2010, and that report is what sparked searches for her body which in turn uncovered the last eight victims.
Is a serial killer at work and are these bodies connected to a murder scene of other murdered prostitutes in 2006? We can confirm the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office in Atlantic City is in contact with Suffolk County Police in New York to see if there is a possible link. Both agencies are working the homicides in their jurisdictions and are carefully piecing together clues.

The FBI is trying to track down two men dubbed “Grandpa Bandits.” Agents say one suspect is responsible for six stick-ups and the other is a suspect in 18 robberies across 12 states. So far, “Grandpa Bandit” #1 has struck banks in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. The FBI has had tremendous success with their digital billboards, and currently there are 75 of them displayed in those states looking for information. “Grandpa Bandit” # 2 is on the run in Oregon, and his most recent robbery was last week at a branch in Medford. The FBI says his previous five robberies were in Salem, Sherwood, West Linn, and Hillsboro. In one instance, a teller told agents the suspect did show a weapon in his waistband, and did threaten to kill the teller. Most of the incidents take 90 seconds or less. According to a recent crime statistic report for 2009 released by the FBI, there were a total of 5,943 robberies of banks last year with more than $45 million taken from institutions, and the hours of 9 – 11 a.m. were the most popular times to strike.

Marc Bookal missing
The ground search for Marc Bookal is back on after investigators received a lead that sent them back to the neighborhood the toddler went missing from. Authorities began searching the area around Benkard Avenue as well as inside and outside Liberty Street School in the area on Friday morning and will continue until the lead is exhausted.
Marc Bookal was reported missing by his mother’s boyfriend, Cory Byrd on December 14, 2009. Marc’s family has gone through the freezing weather and the holidays without their child, and earlier this week, police called off the ground search. The child hasn’t been seen since Byrd told police that he found the downstairs door open to their home, and Marc missing. Earlier this week, police told me they called off the ground search to locate Marc, but the investigation to find out what happened to him is still on going.

Marc Bookal missing
Within the last 24 hours a second anonymous donor gave $5,000 for the safe return of Marc Anthony Bookal. This is on top of an another anonymous donation of $10,000 and Carlie’s Crusade Foundation is offering $1,000, bringing the total to $16,000. Police are asking the public to look around their homes for the boy, and they are also seeking surveillance video from anyone in the southeast section of the city so they can review. Fliers are posted throughout the community, and all police resources are maxed out. I spoke with Sgt. Toomey with the Newburgh Police in New York, and he told me Marc was reported missing by his mother’s boyfriend, Cory Byrd on December 14, 2009 around 1:10 p.m. Byrd told police he went downstairs, the door was open, and Marc was gone. Sgt. Toomey says Byrd told them he thought the child went a few steps away in an adjacent building to visit his aunt, something he did frequently. The toddler has discoloration on the back of his hands from a recent burn injury, and he was last seen wearing a red long sleeved shirt, gray sweatpants, and Nike shoes.
