The manhunt is on to find Beacher Ferrel Hackney, an accused murderer on the run since 2009.  Hackney is now featured as a U.S. Marshal Top 15 Most Wanted.

On March 21, 2009, investigators say Hackney was working as a janitor at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA when he killed his co-workers.  He was upset with his supervisors, Dwight Kerr and Ronnie Stinnett for putting him on the busy dinner shift.  Investigators believe he was more comfortable and happier working the night shift.

U.S. Marshals say Hackney was told by a supervisor to find something to do instead of standing around with his hands in his pockets, and that’s when he allegedly began shooting Dwight.  The victim ran out after Hackney before allegedly opening fire on Stinnnett.

Hackeny was caught on surveillance calmly leaving with the gun in his hand.  He is known to be a loaner and a neat freak with few material possessions.  Investigators believe he could live in austere conditions.  Hackeny is on the shorter side, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs around 145 pounds.  He has brown eyes, grey hair and was last seen missing seven lower teeth.  He is skilled when it comes to the outdoors and is known to make his own fishing and hunting equipment.

FBI’S PROCESS TO FILL BIN LADEN’S SPOT ON TOP 10 MOST WANTED

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Osama Bin Laden held one of the highest ranking spots on the FBI Top 10 Most Wanted for more than a decade.  His mug first appeared on the elite list in 1999, and with the recent news of his death, there’s a large spot to fill.  So how will the FBI make that choice?  Choosing the next suspect may take a little time and coordination.

FILLING BIN LADEN’S SPOT

The FBI says all 56 Field Offices will submit their top candidates for their most wanted nominees and those fugitives will be sent to the Criminal Investigative Division Assistant Director for approval.  From there, the choices will be narrowed down and the FBI Director will have the final say.

FBI TOP 10 - 1

BACKGROUND ON THE TOP 10

The famous Top 10 Most Wanted has been in existence since J. Edgar Hoover launched the program on March 14, 1950.  A reporter for the International News Service asked the Bureau for names and descriptions of the “toughest guys” they wanted captured.  Based on that inquiry, the top 10 was born.

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

The U.S. Marshals have added Texas daycare provider Jessica Renee Tata to their Top 15 Most Wanted fugitive list.  According to the U.S. Marshals, Tata is charged and wanted on four counts of manslaughter, six counts of reckless injury to a child, three counts of abandoning a child under 15 and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

JESS TATA

The U.S. Marshals are working to track down a daycare provider from Texas who fled to Nigeria. Authorities say Jessica Renee Tata was operating a daycare center inside her Houston home when she left seven children, aged 18 months to 3 years, unattended to go shopping. When Tata returned home, her house was on fire, and the toddlers were trapped inside, killing four.  Investigators believe she left a pot of oil on the stove.

Tata was not taken into custody or charged right away. At some point last weekend, authorities say she hopped on a flight out of the country.

Manhunt for Paul Merhige

Paul Merhige (photo updated Oct. 2009)

It’s been three weeks today since the deadly Thanksgiving shooting that took the lives of four family members in Jupiter, FL.  Investigators believe Paul Merhige is the one responsible for the murders, and he is charged him with four counts of first degree murder.  I spoke with Sgt. Scott Pascarella this morning, and he says investigators from his region, including the United States Marshals and the FBI are all on board to tracking Merhige.  They’ve received well over 180 tips, and 90% of those leads are exhausted.  Authorities even searched the pond behind the house where the shooting took place three times looking for evidence. “We don’t want the fire to burn out,” Sgt. Pascarella told me.  He also says Merhige is traveling with four weapons, two handguns and a .308 Remington Rifle, and one other unknown gun.  None of the weapons have been located, and neither has the 2007 Blue Toyota Camry Merhige was last seen driving.  Merhige does posses a concealed weapons permit, and investigators know the handguns were purchased weeks before the shooting, and the rifle was bought the day before.  Just recently, throughout Miami, investigators canvassed new posters in Spanish and Creole throughout to the public.  Sgt. Pascarella says, “We were surprised just how many people didn’t know about this case.”  It’s going to take leg work like this to keep getting the word out.  Right now, there are digital billboards in place as far north as Atlanta, Georgia, and throughout many main cities in Florida.  Sgt. Pascarellea says a new billboard company just contacted them this week to offer some space on their billboards in other area.
