Norma Lopez MISSING (photo of the shirt she was wearing the day she vanished)
Time is ticking on and one month has passed since teenager Norma Lopez was abducted and killed in Moreno Valley, California. Since then, regular classes have resumed at Valley View High and the hunt to find her killer is still active. Police told me Norma left her summer school classes at Valley View and was supposed to meet her sister, but she never made it to the location. Investigators believe she may have taken a short cut from Dracaea Avenue leading out to an area on Cottonwood Avenue, but somewhere in between authorities believe she was kidnapped. In fact, some of her personal belongings were found in a field, and there were signs of a struggle. Investigators believe she was taken against her will and may have been thrown into a newer model green SUV. That vehicle was seen fleeing from the area at a high rate of speed. Deputy Nieburger told me that that vehicle may not necessarily be connected to the murder, but the driver may have seen something. The area where Norma’s body was found is about three miles away from where she went missing, and her remains were in an open field on top of the ground.

UPDATE: A couple in Arizona who tried to adopt baby Gabriel are now persons of interest in his case. Tempe Police say Jack and Terri Smith, a couple who met Elizabeth Johnson about seven months ago in an airport, may have more information about this baby’s disappearance then they have given to investigators. Elizabeth Johnson, Gabriel’s mom, spoke out earlier this week and says she gave the child to a couple she met in a San Antonio park, even though she sent the baby’s father text messages saying she killed him.
According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, there are 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers nationwide, and12% are female keeping our communities safe. Since 1792, there have been more than 18,600 officers killed, and so far, this year alone, 47 officers have been killed. The memorial fund’s webpage says NYC has lost more officers in the line of duty than any other department, and more officers were killed feloniously on Friday than any other day of the week.
The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund strives to dedicate and honor all law enforcement heroes. You can read stories of fallen heroes, or learn more about their museum.
Adding to the 47 men and women who were killed this year experts say there is an increase in offices specifically targeted by gunmen, just like the case a few weeks ago in Washington State where four officers were killed on a Sunday afternoon in Lakewood at a coffee shop. You can make a contribution to this group if you would like, maybe even as a gift for the holidays. All funds will help volunteers continue serving the law enforcement community.
Just when I say I covered one of the worst crimes I’ve seen in a while… here’s another one that took my breath away. It all played out in Newark, New Jersey when investigators say Ivan Reyes came home for lunch and found his 27-year-old wife dead, and his 9-month-old son covered in stab wounds. First Responders did their best to save this baby… and it’s something they can’t get out of their mind. Officials say four firefighters, who responded to the scene, had to be relieved of their duties later because of the emotional trauma they are suffering from this incident. The infant went into surgery for his injuries, and is listed in critical condition – we hope and pray he will survive. Authorities are reviewing surveillance tapes from the area, searching for clues in this case; they say they do not have a description of the suspect.
If you have ANY information on this case, please contact police , or the Hudson County Prosecutor’s office homicide squad at (201) 915-1345 right away to help bring justice to this family. I will have more on this story tomorrow as calls are returned from fire officials and investigators…
