FBI: Crack A Code, Catch A Killer

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

fbi

You could help to solve a murder by breaking secret codes.  This week the FBI released two encrypted notes found in a murder victim’s pants pocket in 1999.  They believe if the code is broken then agents can figure out the victim’s whereabouts before his death, and that could lead to a resolution of this unsolved case.

Authorities say Ricky McCormick’s body was found on June 30, 1999 in St. Louis, Missouri.  In an FBI release this week they said, “Despite extensive work by our Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit (CRRU), as well as help from the American Cryptogram Association, the meanings of those two coded notes remain a mystery to this day, and Ricky McCormick’s murderer has yet to face justice.”

There are dozens of lines of numbers, letters, dashes and parentheses.  It is a secret language and agents believe that the notes were written about three days prior to Ricky’s death.

The FBI said breaking any code involves four basic steps:

1)     Determining the language used

2)     Determining the system used

3)     Reconstructing the key

4)     Reconstructing the plaintext

It’s taken 26 years for one victim in Montgomery County, Maryland to get justice for her case.  Detectives announced they’ve made an arrest in a rape that occurred all the way back in 1984.

Authorities say on October 13, 1984, a female was walking home from Montgomery Mall near Democracy Boulevard and Old Georgetown Road.  I know this area well because this is a mall I frequent.  The victim was approached by an unknown suspect and in the blink of an eye he started to beat and rape her before fleeing the scene.  Thankfully a motorist stopped to assist the victim and call police.

For all these years the case was unsolved; that is until April 2010.  According to a press release, detectives from the Cold Case Unit re-opened the case and physical evidence was submitted for forensic examination.  “Based on the analysis, a DNA profile was obtained and uploaded into the CODIS database.  Once the profile was uploaded, a match was obtained and a suspect was identified,” said authorities.

Remembering Lynsie Ekelund

Remembering Lynsie Ekelund

After 10 years, it looks like questions will be answered and possibly justice will be served for Lynsie Ekelund. She vanished on February 17, 2001, and just last week a person of interest came to light with new information.

Although years had passed, Lynsie’s mom, Nancy Ekelund, never gave up on her daughter. Every corner Nancy turned, every chance she got, she was doing anything and everything to show the nation she wanted to find her child. Nancy wanted to believe that somewhere, somehow her Lynsie was still alive. Nancy plastered her daughter’s face and case information on her car, she published a cookbook to raise money to aid the search efforts and printed and distributed thousands and thousands of fliers.
