Global Initiative To Combat Human Trafficking

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Human TraffickingHuman Trafficking exists in every country.  In an attempt to promote the global fight against the slavery of humans, the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human trafficking (UN.GIFT) was developed and launched in 2007 to prevent the suppression of victims trafficked.  According to their website, “the Global Initiative is based on a simple principle: human trafficking is a crime of such magnitude and atrocity that it cannot be dealt with successfully by any government alone. This global problem requires a global, multi-stakeholder strategy that builds on national efforts throughout the world.”

Their site serves as a “virtual knowledge hub” of information for people to access and learn about human trafficking.  They take components and information from all sites and collect research from all organizations about human trafficking.

UN.GIFT encourages everyone to interact with others on their site and they invite all to utilize the space as a tool to combat human trafficking.

CRAIGSLIST CLOSES ADULT SERVICES SECTION

CRAIGSLIST

A story making headlines over the holiday weekend involves the popular website Craigslist.  You will no longer be able to access the adult services section on the site, at least for now.  What you will find instead is a black and white “censored” block over what used to be the area that promoted free ads for erotic services.  Controversy loomed over this section for many months because of its possible contribution to illegal prostitution and human sex trafficking.  Craigslist took a lot of heat for not reviewing and approving each ad in that section unless they were “flagged” by readers.

The decision came over the weekend after 17 attorney generals from numerous states spoke out and requested the section be shut down.  It is interesting to note that the section was not completely removed; you just cannot access the link.  This is something we will keep an eye on.

Remembering Shaniya Davis

Remembering Shaniya Davis

Shaniya Davis is one of those cases that comes up in conversation frequently.  I am often asked how a child could allegedly be sold by her mother as a sex slave to pay off a debt.  If Shaniya was never passed off to Mario McNeill like a piece of trash, she may still be alive today.  Test results show Shaniya died from asphyxiation, and McNeill is charged with first degree murder and first degree rape.  He is being held without bond and is currently behind bars.  Shaniya’s mother, Antoniette Davis, is charged with child abuse in the form of prostitution, human trafficking, obstructing an official investigation and filing a false police report.  Unfortunately, Davis is out on bond, and has been roaming free since February 21st.  She is scheduled to appear in court on June 3, 2010 to face charges.

Bradley Lockhart, Shaniya’s father, is taking a proactive approach to combat child prostitution and crimes against children.  This is why he created Shaniya Speaks. The organization says the goal is, “to bring voice to Child Exploitation and Sexual Crimes against Children.”  Bradley will tour the country and be the voice for his murdered child.  He will use his personal experience to educate the public on these types of horrific crimes against children.

COMBATING CHILD PROSTITUTION

The murder of Shaniya Davis in North Carolina last fall raises the issue of child prostitution in the United States.  For those who may not know, Shaniya’s own mother, Antoinette Davis, is charged with Human Trafficking, allegedly prostituting her own child.  Antoinette was released on a $51,000 bond a few weeks ago and is set to appear in court sometime next month.  This case is enough to make anyone sick.

The U.S. Department of Justice says, “it is estimated that about 293,000 American youth are currently at risk of becoming victims of commercial sexual exploitation.”  The report goes on to say that “children are mainly recruited into prostitution through forced abduction, pressure from parents, or through deceptive agreements between parents and traffickers.”

I cannot understand why anyone, especially a parent, would want to do this to their child… Aren’t parents supposed to protect their children for life?  Investigators told me early into this investigation that Antoinette may have sold Shaniya to pay off a drug debt.

Through all of this, I would like your input.  The goal is to highlight the best programs in the United States that help to protect children from this trade and to make communities aware of the resources.
