American Airlines Pilot Found Dead, Investigators Working As A Homicide

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011
Russell Christopher Walker (Broward County Sheriff's Released Photo)
Russell Christopher Walker (victim)

Investigators say American Airlines pilot Russell Christopher Walker, 50, was found dead in his Pompano Beach home late last week and authorities now believe he was a victim of homicide.  Investigators received information that Walker had not been seen for more than seven days, and that’s when the discovery was made.

Robert Caine is a neighbor in his community who told the International Crime Wire late last night he didn’t know Walker, but he said their community runs on a stretch of road about a mile long and dead ends.  Cain also said most folks wave to one another and are friendly, but it’s not an incredibly close knit neighborhood.

At this point, authorities are not saying how Walker died or if this is an isolated incident.  Reports indicate he left behind a girlfriend and mother who both live in California and he was a former Navy pilot and worked for American Airlines for the last 18 years.  Walker was based out of the Miami airport.

If you have any information on this case, there is a reward offered.  Please contact Crimestoppers with your information:  (954) 493-TIPS

MURDER MYSTERY: Long Island Bodies, Gilgo Beach – 5 Facts About The Case

A murder mystery is unfolding on the east coast, and investigators are working to figure out if a serial killer could be at work.  In New York and New Jersey this past week, eight women have been found murdered, but the question is: could the cases in both states be connected?

I can confirm the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office in Atlantic City is in contact with Suffolk County Police in New York to see if there is a possible link.  Both agencies are working four homicides each in their jurisdictions and are carefully piecing together clues.

The first steps are to positively identify the bodies found earlier this week on Gilgo Beach on Long Island.  The only piece of solid information came out last night when police said that none of the remains found on the beach were missing woman Shannan Gilbert.  Shannan was originally reported missing in May, and authorities were searching the area for clues when they came across the bodies last weekend.

William Curl (left) Remembering Antinette "Toni" Keller (right)

UPDATE:  William Curl, was arrested over the weekend in Covington, Louisina and charged with first-degree murder, criminal sexual assault and arson.  Investigators say he is the man responsible for the death of Northern Illinois University freshman Anitnette “Toni” Keller.  Curl had his first court appearance this morning and pled not guilty.  Currently, he is being held on a $5 million bond.

It appears this was a crime of opportunity, and there does not appear to be any initial connection between Curl and Toni.  The victim’s body still has not been positively identified, but authorities classified the case as a homicide.

Missing Bank CEO’s Body Found, Homicide Suspected

Remembering David Widlak
Remembering David Widlak

This case has been a bit bizarre from the start.  David Widlak, CEO of Community Central Bank in Michigan went missing last month.  Sunday, duck hunters came across his body off Grosse Pointe Farms.  The area is only five miles away from where David went missing from his main bank office and about a thirty minute drive from downtown Detroit.  Reporters early speculated that David took his own life, or maybe intentionally disappeared.  Neither of those theories appears to be accurate, and investigators say they are working the discovery as a homicide investigation.

The autopsy and toxicology tests are not complete at this time, but reports reveal that a weapon was not found near the body.

David was a licensed attorney and a professional arbitrator.  He was a loving husband, and his wife spoke out to say that although this is not the outcome they wanted, she is thankful his body was found.

ZAHRA BAKER’S CASE SHIFTS TO HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION, SEARCH CONTINUES

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
Zahra Baker MISSING
Zahra Baker MISSING

Investigators announced the Amber Alert initially activated for a missing 10-year-old girl has been canceled.  The investigation has now shifted to a homicide investigation.  Zahra Clare Baker was just reported missing over the weekend, but authorities indicate there is a chance she hasn’t been seen over the last month.

This story has captured national attention for a number of reasons.  The Amber Alert is initially what drew the nation into this case, but Zahra’s medical conditions made many hearts break.  Zahra is a bone cancer survivor, uses hearing aids and has a prosthetic leg to walk.  This child has endured enough in her lifetime and to think that she may have been killed is a lot for her family, community and folks who have never met her to understand.

Zahra’s stepmother, Elisa Baker, is currently behind bars; not for Zahra’s disappearance, but for obstruction of justice in this case.  She had a court appearance earlier today. Authorities say Baker admitted to writing a ransom note found inside the family home after Zahra was reported missing.  Burke County Sheriff John McDevitt and his team are working to figure out exactly how long Zahra has been missing by closing in a timeline.

UPDATE: ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT MURDER

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010
Remembering Kyleigh Sousa
Remembering Kyleigh Sousa

The spring semester had just come to a close, and the Memorial Day weekend was on the horizon for Kyleigh Sousa. The 21-year-old Arizona State University student was on her way to grab a bite to eat with a friend around 2 a.m. when her life changed forever. Tempe Police Sgt. Steve Carbajal said that Kyleigh was approached by a “brazen criminal” who was driving a silver Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger.  He was described as being Hispanic and heavy-set.

After talking to Kyleigh, the suspect grabbed her purse and she became entangled. Kyleigh was dragged by the vehicle, hit her head, and died. Sgt. Carbajal added, “She didn’t have an opportunity to get away” and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Now that school is back in session at Arizona State, the manhunt continues to find her killer.  Sgt. Carbajal told me this week that althought there have not been any public updates on the case, investigators are working every angle possible and hopefully the right lead will come in to put them on the killers track.
