HELP END DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Pepsi Refresh Project Supports Cause

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

national network

The National Network to End Domestic Violence began more than 15 years ago when a group of victim advocates united to promote federal legislation on domestic violence. As the years went on, the mission grew to dozens of state-wide groups and coalitions across the U.S.

Today, NNEDV continues to provide training and assistance to end domestic violence through education and technology and now they are trying to get Amy’s Courage Fund, another mission to help victims of domestic violence get back on their feet.

There is currently a $250,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project to help Amy’s Courage Fund and NNEDV. Sadly, the funds for Amy’s Courage Fund were depleted and shut down in Nov. 2010.

The goal is to continue helping domestic violence victims across America. Visit the Pepsi Refresh Project to learn more about their large donation.

MISSING MOM’S ESTRANGED HUSBAND CHARGED WITH MURDER

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

*UPDATE*Venus Stewart’s estranged husband, Douglas Stewart, is officially charged with her murder even though officials do not have her body.  He was arrainged yesterday and a preliminary hearing is set for July 1, 2010.  More to come on this case…

Domestic violence is a vicious cycle, a cycle that many victims cannot pull themselves out of because of children, their safety, or just plain fear of being alone. It appears Venus Stewart was pulling herself out of a violent relationship. She packed up her children and moved to Michigan to get away from her husband, and now she is missing. Lt. Risko with the Michigan State Police says Venus was snatched from the front yard of her parents’ home on April 26, 2010 as she went to mail a letter.

Her husband, Doug Stewart, denies any wrongdoing. He initially provided an alibi, which is not solid, and investigators consider him the only person of interest. In a bizarre twist this week, Lt. Risko told me today he believes there was an impersonator running around pretending to be Doug Stewart in his hometown of Newport News, Virginia. The same hometown Doug Stewart claimed to be in the morning his estranged wife vanished.

STACY PETERSON UPDATE

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Stacey Peterson and Lisa Stebic have a lot in common, although the women have never met. Both are mothers to young children, both live in Illinois, and both have been missing for more than a couple of years. It’s the same sad story with missing mom Susan Powell who vanished late last year in Utah, and Venus Stewart who was abducted outside her parents’ home in late April in Michigan. In both cases, their husbands are persons of interest in the disappearances, and in all of these cases the husbands claim they have no clue where their wives could be. Every time I hear about a new case, and a mother vanishes, I flash back to each one of these women. Every so often a new tip or search will bring one of their cases to the spotlight, and the public its on the edge of their seats to see if the lead will pan out.  That was the case this past weekend.  Investigators in Illinois were acting on information that Stacy Peterson’s body was buried in a muddy, thickly wooded, private farmland in Peoria, Illinois.

DATING VIOLENCE LEADS TO MURDER

Remembering Yeardley Love

Remembering Yeardley Love

The tragedy at the University of Virginia earlier this week is shining a light on dating domestic violence.  Yeardley Love, a star lacrosse player due to graduate in a few weeks, had her whole life ahead of her.  Sadly, her beautiful life was cut short when police say her ex-boyfriend, George Huguely, lashed out and murdered her in a violent rage.  Police say Huguely repeatedly hit Yeardley’s head against the wall after breaking into her bedroom, leaving her in a pool of blood.  Right now we do not know if there were early warning signs leading up to this alleged murder, but hopefully investigators will figure out if Yeardley was a victim of domestic violence long before she was killed.  If there were early warning signs, I hope investigators release that information to the public to educate youth on dating violence.  There is a pattern that comes along with this type of violence.

COPS: AJA JOHNSON STILL MISSING

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010
Aja Dotson MISSING

Aja Dotson MISSING

It’s been more than a week since Aja Johnson was abducted and her mother Tonya was found beaten to death in an RV.  Since then investigators in Oklahoma issued a warrant for Lester Hobbs arrest charging him with first degree murder and kidnapping.  Hobbs is a convicted felon, and according to court documents was not supposed to have any contact with Aja.  Police say they’ve received leads about possible sightings of Hobbs, Aja and the car he may be driving, but so far nothing has panned out.  The Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations and the United States Marshal service put out a $20,000 reward, hoping someone will bring them the information they need to find this child.

AJA JOHNSON STILL MISSING, GRANDMOTHER SPEAKS OUT

Thursday, January 28th, 2010
Aja Johnson MISSING

Aja Johnson MISSING

I spoke with Alice Dunkin this morning, Tonya Hobbs mother, and missing 7-year-old Aja Johnson’s grandmother.  She told me she screamed bloody murder and blew up when she learned her daughter was killed.  It is devastation to Alice especially because she said her son was murdered three years ago this October, he was shot 11 times, and now she has to go through this with her daughter.  Along with losing both of her children, Alice fears what may happen to her granddaughter Aja, “Lester does not like Aja, he is mean to Aja, he’s made her eat jalapeño peppers, and has a paddle with her name on it. I’ve seen bruises he’s left on her little behind. I don’t know why or if it’s her medical problem or what. If she doesn’t take her medication, she’s climbing the wall.” Aja Johnson is still missing, and her life is in danger.  Investigators believe the 7-year-old was abducted by Lester Hobbs, 47, after her mother’s murder over the weekend.  The last time Aja or Hobbs were seen was Saturday, January 23, 2009 around 6 p.m.  Lester Hobbs is a convicted felon, and at one point Aja’s mom reported to police that he wanted to kill his daughter with a hammer.  Hobbs is currently wanted for a failure to appear warrant out of Lincoln County, Oklahoma for not showing up for his DUI case earlier this week, and there is now a warrant out for him for the murder of Tonya Hobbs and the abduction of Aja Johnson.  Official cause of death has not been released, but it appears at this time Tonya died from blunt force trauma to her body, she may have been beaten to death.
