Bethany Storro
Bethany Storro is now facing charges of second-degree theft for accepting donations after she admittedly imposed self-inflicted acid wounds on her face. The acid hoax generated thousands of dollars that were given to her in wake of the attack. Storro allegedly spent the money on a new computer, dinner for her parents, new clothes and a shopping spree at Target.
Storro told investigators she was attacked on August 30 when a suspect splashed acid in her face as she walked into a Starbucks in Vancouver, Washington. She helped authorities generate a sketch that went out nationwide for a woman who did not exist. Investigators became suspicious when inconsistencies in Storro’s story became apparent. She didn’t have any scars on her neck or hands and it appeared the acid was applied like a mask to her face. Storro also claimed she purchased sunglasses just before the attack, but investigators found that to be untrue. Cancelling her appearance on “Oprah” opened the can of worms we are aware of today.

- Mesa Sketch
Investigators in Arizona are still looking into an acid attack on a woman in an apartment complex in Mesa. Authorities say Derri Velarde, 41-year-old mother of five, was getting out of her car in her apartment complex on September 4 when she was attacked with acid. Investigators say the suspect did not say a word and tossed the contents of her cup on the victim, which immediately started to burn her face.
Although investigators in Washington say Bethany Storro’s acid attack was self-inflicted, investigators in Arizona believe this was deliberate. Mesa Police have released a sketch of a Hispanic woman, between 30 – 40 years old, around 5’6” and 140 pounds. She was described as having a ponytail and wide hips, and was wearing a black tank top and black sweat pants with a white stripe.
The victim immediately jumped in her shower and attempted to rinse off the acid, which may have helped her second degree burns. She is still recovering in the hospital.

Bethany Storro (victim)
UPDATE: Investigators say Bethany Storro admitted to authorities that the acid attack was a hoax. She told authorities she threw the acid on herself. Investigators have wasted hundreds of hours looking for a suspect who does not exist. More to come on this story…
Bethany Storro was walking down the street in Vancouver, Washington, getting ready to head into a Starbucks. She was celebrating her new job and enjoying life when she was viciously attacked with acid. Police say an unknown African American woman walked up to Bethany and uttered the words: “Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?” The stranger then threw the contents inside the cup on Bethany’s face. Investigators believe the contents were some sort of acid.
The pain was agonizing as she fell to the ground screaming for dear life. The skin was burning off her face and parts of her clothes were disintegrating. Thursday, with her parents at her side, Bethany spoke out for the first time about the incident. She said she will work on forgiving her attacker.

Bethany was released from the hospital earlier this week and Vancouver’s Anytime Fitness announced a fundraiser to be held Friday to help ease some of the financial burden. Bethany is a member at the facility that will host a self-defense class for women from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. You can join the class for $20 and all of the proceeds will go to a fund. Bethany’s co-workers at the Safeway where she is employed started an additional fund at Riverview Community Bank branches throughout Oregon and Washington.

Police are looking for the woman who attacked Bethany. There isn’t a lot of information about the suspect, but some witnesses describe her as an African American female, 25-35 years old. She was last seen wearing a green shirt, and khaki pants. Her hair may have been slicked back.
