Anthony Sowell, Convicted Sex Offender

Anthony Sowell, Convicted Sex Offender

Just before going live this evening, I was able to get in touch with the former mother-in-law of Anthony Sowell.  According to investigators, six bodies were found dead inside Sowell’s home in Cleveland, Ohio.  His former mother-in-law does not wish to have her name published, but what she did say was Sowell was married to her daughter a little more than 20 years ago. Sadly, her daughter passed away about 11 years ago (unrelated to this case), and she doesn’t remember too many details about Sowell.  However she was able to tell me that Sowell and her daughter met while they were both serving in the military. Her daughter was only married to Anthony Sowell about a year, then they divorced. During that time period, Sowell stayed overnight at her house once, and seemed very normal to her. Although everything seemed to be okay, she did say her family did not know much about him. After Sowell and her daughter separated, he moved away. She said the couple lived together on base while they were in the United States Marine Corps. I contacted the headquarters of the United States Marine Corps tonight, and because I received this information after business hours, they were going to have to put the request into St. Louis to have the archives searched to confirm the actual dates Sowell was serving in the military.  The mother I spoke to is going to go through some of her daughter’s old records for more information, and pictures, and I will touch base with her again in the morning.  I am supposed to hear back from the Marines tomorrow as well, and I will update this story then.

UPDATE: Six Women Found Dead Inside Home

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I just got off the phone with Cleveland Police Lt. Tom Stacho.  He says all six victims are identified as African American females, and in fact, five died of strangulation.  The sixth victim died from undetermined homicidal violence.  Lt. Stacho also wants the public to know there is mis-information being reported.  Today at the 4th district headquarters in Cleveland, there will be a post set up for the families of missing women in the area.  He does not have an accurate count on the active adult missing cases of females who are African American from that area.

At this time, they are not collecting DNA on the spot, but there are detectives on hand to talk to families about their missing relative or friend, and whatever arrangements can be made, will be done to collect DNA and dental records.

Keep checking www.michellesigona.com for the latest on this case today.

Six women found dead inside an Ohio home…

Anthony Sowell, convicted sex offender case – Police say the bodies were found inside his home.

CBS CRIMESIDER

I just got off the phone with Powell Cesar, spokesman with the Cuyahoga County Corner’s office in Ohio.  He says, the corner’s office can confirm there were six female bodies found inside the home where Anthony Sowell lives.  It is confirmed four of the women died by strangulation, the fifth victim ‘may’ have died by strangulation (working to determine).  The sixth body was badly decomposed and it may take some time to determine the cause of death.  Cesar says, “the bodies could have been there from weeks, to months to years.  Some were covered in blankets, some found in a crawl space, and others in a shallow grave.  When the corner’s office arrived on the scene, they had their hands full.  They had to secure the bodies, bring in a cadaver dog, and determine a fix manner and cause of death, then the next step is to determine the women’s age, race and gender.  We know for sure, two of the women were African American.  Anthropologists in their office can figure out quickly whether the bodies are male or female because of their pelvis bone.  Right now, the Cleveland 4th district headquarters has a command post set up, and are looking for families with loved ones who are missing.  They are collecting DNA samples from those family members, and the corners office will try to match up those samples to the victims.  Cesar says, “the only case I can compare this to is a house fire where five people perished, but something like this is a big case.”  Another case Cesar mentioned in comparison was the case of Jeffery Lungrin who was executed on October 24, 2006 for killing a family of five in 1989.  The youngest victim in that case was only 7-years-old.  You can read the press release here. http://www.drc.ohio.gov/public/press/press253.htm
