Aveion Lewis mother, Morgan Lockett and her husband, Brandon, were indicted this week and charged with second degree murder and child neglect and cruelty.  Police say a hoax abduction report was filed by Brandon Lockett, Aveion’s step-father on January 15, 2010 claiming the toddler was abducted by masked men who broke into his home.  Sadly, the 2-year-old was found dead in a nearby landfill 12 days later. Police said they tracked the trash collected along the 2100 block of King Charles Avenue, and that is what led them to the discovery of the body. Thankfully, the trash company keeps very good records, and police were able to locate the truck in route to the landfill before it made a deposit.  The truck emptied its contents in an isolated area at the landfill, and investigators sifted through the garbage.

Early on, investigators charged Brandon Lockett with improper disposal of a human body, obstruction of justice, and felony child neglect after the false report was filed.  Police canceled an Amber Alert for the child after Lockett admitted Aveion was dead before the bogus abduction took place. Although conflicting statements were given to authorities early on, they were still able to come to this conclusion in a timely manner.

SEX OFFENDER ARRESTED AS SUSPECT IN DISAPPEARANCE

Monday, March 1st, 2010
John Albert Gardner (booking photo)

John Albert Gardner (booking photo)

Registered sex offender, John Albert Gardner, is being held on preliminary charges of suspicion of murder and rape in the disappearance of missing teen, Chelsea King.  Gardner has a conviction for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age, and he was staying with his mother in the Rancho Bernardo Community where Chelsea went missing.  Authorities say Chelsea vanished last Thursday after she went for a jog at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park.  Chelsea, 17, is an avid runner for a local high school.  She left her car in the park nearby, and her cell phone was inside the vehicle. Gardner is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in San Diego Superior Court, and investigators have 72 hours to file official charges.

Investigators say physical evidence found at Lake Hodges lead them to Gardner, and there may be a chance he is linked to a December 27, 2009 attack on another jogger in area.  The victim in that incident told investigators she was tackled by a suspect who demanded money from her.  At this point, Gardner is not charged with that attack.  At a press conference last night, authorities said Gardner could have played a role in the Amber Dubois case as well.  Amber disappeared more than a year ago as she walked to a nearby high school.

POLICE: Tonya Hobbs murdered with a hammer, daughter still missing

Aja Johnson & Lester Hobbs (police say photo was taken just hours before the murder)

The United States Marshal Service held a press conference in Oklahoma today.  Authorities released brand new pictures and information in the Aja Johnson case.  It’s been more than a month since Aja Johnson was abducted and her mother Tonya was found beaten to death inside an RV.  Since then, investigators in Oklahoma have issued a warrant for Lester Hobbs arrest charging him with first degree murder and kidnapping.  I spoke with Deputy U.S. Marshal Arthur Templteton out of the Loughton office earlier, and he said there has been no activity on the case.  He stated that they have, “not had anything viable on the vehicle, Aja Johnson, or Lester Hobbs.”

When this case originally broke, there was a massive ice storm that swept through most of the state of Oklahoma.  The storm paralyzed the region for 8 – 14 days. During that period, many folks were without power, so some have not even heard about the Amber Alert or the murder.

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010
Jarred Harrell (mugshot)

Jarred Harrell (mugshot)

Jarred Harrell, a person of interest in the Somer Thompson murder, will be extradited to Florida.  Last Thursday, Florida Governor, Charlie Crist requested the extradition, and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour granted the request.  According to a press release from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, “Because the safety of all law enforcement officers involved and the successful extradition of this individual are of upmost importance, our agency will not reveal the exact date and time of the planned extradition.  In addition, if members of the media are able to obtain Harrell extradition timeline information from sources other than the CCSO, our agency will not respond to those related inquiries and will neither confirm nor deny the information.  Our agency will not divulge what law enforcement officers are part of the Harrell extradition process until after the process is complete. Once Jarred Harrell is safely transported to our jail facility here in Green Cove Springs, the media will be notified via an emailed release.  You will be provided ample notice post-arrival so that coverage arrangements can be made with the Clay County Clerk of Court for whatever court appearances may follow in the Clay County court system.  Our agency does not orchestrate “perp walks” of any kind and we have an enclosed sally port area through which defendants enter the jail.” Although we do not know the specific date Harrell will make an appearance in Florida, thankfully investigators are one step closer to possibly learning what happened to Somer.   Harrell has not yet been charged with Somer’s death.[”]

PERSON OF INTEREST NAMED IN SOMER THOMPSON MURDER

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
Jarred Harrell (mugshot from Clay County)

Jarred Harrell (mugshot from Clay County)

Clay County Sheriff Rick Besseler named a ‘person of interest’ tonight in the Somer Thompson case.  The Sheriff says Jarred Mitchell Harrell, 24, was arrested in Meridian, Mississippi, and is currently being held on a $1 million bail.  Harrell is not only a person of interest in the horrific abduction and murder of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, but he is also charged with 29 counts of child pornography.  Harold formerly resided in the neighborhood where Somer was abducted last fall as she walked home from school.

According to the warrant released by the Clay County Sheriff’s office, Jarred Harrell was asked to move out of his residence on August 4, 2009 after his roommates found he was responsible for the theft of a roommate’s IPOD touch.  It appears Harrell messed up when he left his computer, and a box of compact disks behind.  According to the warrant, “While Jarred was gone the roommates got into Jarred’s computer and searched for child pornography.  They searched after they had been told that Jarred had been caught viewing child pornography… They had found a compact disk in Jarred’s box of CD’s with the writing “don’t lose music” on it. A check of the compact disk revealed that there was a large quantity of child erotica and pornography on the disk. The computer was turned over to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office the following day on 8-10-09.  The computer was processed by the Office of The Attorney General Cyber Crimes Unit after a search warrant was obtained.  The forensic processing of the computer revealed a large amount of child erotica and also child pornography.  There were 24 pornographic images of children and 5 moves that contained child pornography.”

The State’s Attorney for Wicomico County issued a release today stating, “The Grand Jury for Wicomico County  indicted Thomas Leggs, Jr. for the First Degree Murder of Sarah Foxwell, in addition to First Degree Burglary, Kidnapping, Kidnapping of a Child, and First and Second Degree Sexual Offense.”  Leggs is currently held without bond.  According to the press release, “The State will file Notice of Intent To Seek the Death Penalty and the Notice of Intent To Seek Life Without Possibility of Parole before the end of February.”

I spoke with Sheriff Lewis of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s office earlier this afternoon and asked him about other victims of Thomas Leggs, Jr.  Sheriff Lewis says,”We have had many people call us with their own personal relationships or run ins with Thomas Leggs.  We believe Thomas legs committed this alone.  We will be seeking the death penalty.  All he has to is request a change of venue (regarding a courtroom), and a judge cannot deny him of that.”

LESTER HOBBS ON THE RUN, AJA JOHNSON STILL MISSING

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Lester Hobbs (suspect)

Lester Hobbs (suspect)

Two weeks have passed since Aja Johnson was abducted and her mother Tonya was found beaten to death inside an RV.  Since then investigators in Oklahoma issued a warrant for Lester Hobbs arrest charging him with first degree murder and kidnapping.  Hobbs is a convicted felon, and according to court documents was not supposed to have any contact with Aja.  Police say they’ve received leads about possible sightings of Hobbs, the United States Marshals service sex offender unit is involved, but so far nothing has panned out.  The Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations and the United States Marshal service put out a $20,000 reward, hoping someone will bring them the information they need to find this child.  Funeral services for Tonya Hobbs are scheduled tomorrow for 11 a.m.

Last week I spoke with Alice Dunkin, Tonya Hobbs mother, and missing 7-year-old Aja Johnson’s grandmother.  She told me she screamed bloody murder and “blew up” when she learned her daughter was killed.  It is devastation to Alice especially because she said her son was shot and killed nearly three years ago, and now she has to go through this with her daughter.  Along with losing both of her children, Alice fears what may happen to her granddaughter Aja,

BABY EDDIE SALAZAR FOUND (UPDATE)

Friday, February 5th, 2010
Eddie Salazar MISSING

Eddie Salazar MISSING

UPDATE:  Sadly, 8-month-old Eddie Salazar was found in the Spring River, just east of Carthage earlier this afternoon.  Police say Eddie Salazar Sr., the baby’s father, is charged with filing a false police report, and is now considered the prime suspect in his son’s murder.  This case is very similar to the Aveion Lewis case in Roanoke, Virginia where investigators say Aveion’s step father filed a false police report that his step-son was abducted, and a few weeks later the toddler’s body was found in a landfill.

Police say Eddie Salazar was abducted late last night by two masked men.  He is only 8-months-old, and has a lung-shaped birthmark on his right bicep.  Investigators say two men broke into Eddie’s home, beat his father, and left with the child.  It appears, at this point, the abduction was random.  If you have any information, please call:  (417) 237-7200

We will bring you more as this story develops…
