Update: Investigators say skeletal remains found in Ocean City, Maryland at the end of April are those of Greg Forte. DNA testing was performed and the results were released yesterday. I’ve been in touch with Greg’s girlfriend, family and friends over the last few months… my thoughts and prayers are with those he left behind.
Greg Forte vanished on February 9, 2010. Since then, investigators say they have not had any confirmed sightings, and this case has turned into a big mystery. I spoke with Christi, one of Greg’s best friends. She says Greg and his girlfriend Kara have been dating since May 2009, and have known each other for four years. Cristi says, “anyone who knows Greg, loves him.” He is getting ready to start as a long term substitute teacher at Indian River High School, and overall life is going well for him. Right now, Greg currently lives in Selbyville, Delaware, just a couple of miles west of Fenwick Island. If you are familiar with the area, it is along the Mason-Dixon line that separates Ocean City, Maryland from Delaware.
Christi says Greg had dinner at Smitty McGee’s with his parents on the evening of February 9, 2010. While he was there, Christi says surveillance shows he drank two Yelgling, and didn’t stay long. Greg looked very relaxed, and happy. After dinner, Greg stopped by a 7-11 in north Ocean City, and purchased a 22 oz. Heineken. Christi says after his last stop, he landed at a friend’s house in Fenwick, Delaware. They were having a small get together, with about nine people total. There were mainly teachers at the house hanging out and playing scrabble because everyone was off because of the snow. That night, the weather was starting to hit hard dropping sleet and snow, and the next day it was an all out blizzard. Friends say Greg was watching the hockey game, while others played scrabble, and overall it was a lot of fun. At 10:40 p.m. Kara, his girlfriend called while he was at the house, and Greg told her he wasn’t going to stay much longer. Friends say Greg walked out the front door around 11:00 p.m.
Greg didn’t say goodbye, and everyone thought he was coming back because his beer and coat were left behind. They thought Greg stepped out to give Kara a call back so he could have a private conversation. Christi says Greg’s car was parked under a nearby condo, out of the elements, the next street over. When Greg didn’t return, friends at the house thought he just decided to head home. One of Greg’s friends sent him a text message asking if he made it to his house, but according to Christi, phone records show Greg never read the text message.
The next morning, Greg’s car was found nearby, the door was open, the radio was on, keys were in the ignition. In addition, his hooded sweatshirt, socks and cell phone were found inside the car – and they were soaked. Greg cannot see without his glasses, and they were left behind as well. Christi says his favorite “Rusty” hat was in the middle of the road. Christi says one thing that hasn’t been located is a green sweatshirt with the words, “Indian River Soccer” on the front. Kara knows for sure that sweatshirt was in his vehicle. Greg is described as an awesome soccer player, he played throughout high school and college, and coached while attending Graduate school at the University of Delaware.
The day after Greg went missing, investigators could not do a full blown search because of the massive snow storm. On Thursday, February 11, 2010, investigators held an organized search effort with volunteers, and Friday Greg’s friends and family canvassed the area with missing person fliers. That night, a candlelight vigil was held and early Saturday morning, search dogs were brought out to find anything leading to Greg – sadly, they didn’t find anything.

Oh no, how sad. Thanks for the update. I’d been wondering about this disappearance since first hearing about it a few months ago. I wonder if we’ll ever find out what really took place that night….
