SAFETY STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME

In all of the Cat Burglar cases in Maryland, police say the victims left their doors and windows open for the prowler to roam around inside.  Below is a list of simple safety steps to help keep your home safe.  The idea is prevention, and taking these measures may ‘possibly’ prevent a break in.

SAFETY STEP 1: Do a 5 minute house check — make sure your windows and doors are locked.  If you are renting, and the windows aren’t locking or there is a problem with the door, then put a call into your maintenance office today.  If you are a homeowner, call a repair service or a friend to get the situation resolved.  Time is of the essence.

SAFETY STEP 2:  If you don’t have a security alarm, consider getting one installed – or you could purchase the window or door alarms that aren’t connected to a main system, but will sound to scare off intruders.  If a security or any alarm system isn’t in your budget, you can always stick those alarm stickers on your windows and place signs outside your home that say your home is secure.  This could deter a burglar from breaking into your home.

SAFETY STEP 3:  You can purchase a steel or wooden bar to put in between the window or sliding glass door. You can buy these at the local Home Depot or Lowes.

SAFETY STEP 4:  Homeowners/renters can install a pin or nail into the window frame, and this enables the window to rise up only a few inches.

SAFETY STEP 5:  Sleep with a cell phone and/or house phone next to your bed.

SAFETY STEP 6:  (one of my personal favorites) If your car has an alarm, you can keep that remote next to you at night. If someone enters your home hit the alarm button on your vehicle, along with calling police if you can – that always draws attention.

Again, these are just a few ideas to keep you safe in your home.
